These images were taken in Beijing over a period of three years from 2000 to 2003 and document life in the ancient alleyways and lanes in the heart of Beijing.

These narrow lanes that crisscross the city are called hutongs.

Although many hutongs have now succumbed to the developers bulldozers, many still remain today.
